Leeton High School student Chevaughn Moore was recently awarded Victor Chang school science award at Junee High School.
The Year 11 student says her passion for science began at a young age.
“It’s something I’ve always loved. I was the eight year old talking about all the different planets,” she said.
“My family always encouraged me to ask questions and I loved learning how everything works.”
Chevaughn says her love of science stems from an desire to understand the world around her.
“I love understanding how the world works. There are things that might look completely unrelated and suddenly they link together in new ways,” she said.
“I love seeing things link together like that.”
She hopes to carry her passion through to university.
“I’m really interested in genetics as a school subject. It’s something I’m passionate about and something I’d like to go into after I finish school.”
The award recognises students with a passion and aptitude for science. It aims to encourage people to young people to go into science and research fields.

It’s an initiative run by the Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute.
The institute honours the memory and legacy of Dr Victor Chang, an Australian cardiac surgeon and a pioneer the heart transplant. It operates as a research and research training facility.
“It’s pretty exciting. The award also comes with an invitation to go to the Institute in Sydney ... I’m going up in December and I’m really looking forward to it. “
Chevaughn will see the Institute’s inner-workings firsthand.
Science is an ever-growing industry and Chevaughn wants to see more people get involved.
“Science is opening as a career-field. It’s becoming more and more relevant to the way society works. It’s something that will be really important and relevant down the track,” she said.

“There are so many opportunities and fields of work. It’s not just people in lab-coats obsessing over test tubes. It’s a whole host of a lot of different industries.”
