Year 7 camp
THE year 7 camp has now come and gone with 75 students enjoying all that the Warrumbui Retreat and Recreation Centre had to offer. Teacher and students returned on March 14, weary after an action packed time but all reports confirm that students were exemplary during the camp with the night bush walk being one of the many highlights. A great time had by all. There are photos available on our Facebook page for you to view.
World’s Greatest Shave
OVER the last few weeks 12 students have been securing donations to support the Leukaemia Foundation with the World’s Greatest Shave.
The goal was set at $1800 by the group. I am exceptionally please to report that at last count today funds raised for this very worthy cause was well in excess of the $2000 mark.
It was a very proud moment to watch these young people lose their locks in the hopes of making a difference to the lives of cancer sufferers and their families. Also a huge thank you to our volunteer hairdressers, Lisa Marks and Courtney Bartram, who gave their time to support our students in their fundraising and to our students Macy, Tahnee and Morgan for getting on the front foot and bringing this important cause to our attention.
National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence
ON MARCH 16 we celebrated the National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence. With this year’s theme being ‘imagine a world free from bullying’ we continue to address with our students the negative effects of bullying and the impact this behaviour has on the lives of young people and their families who are victims of this behaviour. Our fortnightly wellbeing meetings provides the opportunity for students to discuss and voice their thoughts on critical issues such as bullying. Bullying. No Way! wrist bands were worn proudly by staff and students and a free BBQ also marked this important occasion. The SRC did a wonderful job presenting at our assembly a presentation on bullying and manning the barbecue on Friday.
2LS reading and comprehension strategies
WE CONTINUE exploring strategies to support our students to improve their reading and comprehension skills. This week we begin a new strategy-questioning. Good readers ask questions before, during and after they have read a text.
Sometimes the question is answered in the text. Sometimes we have to use our own prior knowledge and what’s in the text to help us come up with the answer. Sometimes the question may not be answered by the text at all and we have to find another source of information to help you. Asking and answering questions helps us look for information, which builds understanding.
SRC induction
ON MARCH 9 the 2018 Student Representative Council was inducted at the whole school assembly. As the name of this team suggests, these are students who have been elected and are willing to represent the students of Leeton High School. They have been selected by the students for their leadership qualities, their approachability, and their potential to make meaningful, positive changes for our school.
This year a very strong group of students has been elected to the SRC; they have already put forward some incredible ideas. There’s no doubt that this group will bring innovation, and a focus on the values of the school and community. They are open, receptive, willing and they keep a positive outlook.
