The sun was setting over the amphitheatre at Splendour in the Grass, with many choosing to sit and relax rather than dance for Bernard Fanning's solo performance. However just as the sun disappeared completely, Splendour-goers got a surprise treat as Fanning casually reunited Powderfinger for two glorious songs. "It's been 10 years since Powderfinger played Splendour," he told the crowd near Byron Bay. "Let's have a little anniversary." Fanning invited former bandmates Ian Haug, John Collins and Darren Middleton onto the stage as the crowds, screaming in approval, leapt up and ran down the hill to be close to the Finger. In the most electrifying set of the festival, thousands passionately sang along to (Baby I've Got You) On My Mind and These Days. Just as casually as they'd been introduced, Fanning's former bandmates left the stage, leaving him to end his set with his solo hit with a lively Wish You Well. Fanning had hinted at a reunion earlier in his solo set, telling the crowd that Powderfinger had played at the first Splendour in the Grass festival before playing one of their songs. It was a special moment for fans of the group, and fans of Australian music in general. The band has not played together as Powderfinger since their farewell tour in 2010.
