Two people are dead and one man is fighting for his life after a car crashed into a tree in the state's east. A police spokeswoman said the wreck was discovered on Stockdale-Fernbank Road in Stockdale about 8.45am on Saturday. It has not yet been established when the car slammed into the tree. A man in his 60s sustained head injuries in the crash and was being airlifted to The Alfred in a critical condition, an Ambulance Victoria spokesman said. He said the man was at one stage going to be taken to the Latrobe Regional Hospital instead because of poor weather, but conditions had improved enough to allow the helicopter to fly to Melbourne. Major collision investigation units are headed to the scene of the crash, the police spokeswoman said. The two deaths bring the preliminary road toll for the year up to 134, 20 more than at the same time in 2015.
