Peter Hadfield will visit Leeton shire in his role as an Australia Day ambassador and is set to take part in many of the events planned for the day.
Mr Hadfield was, for 10 consecutive years, Australian champion in the highly-demanding sport of decathlon.
He captained both the Australian and Oceania track and field teams, as well as representing his country at two Olympic Games and two Commonwealth Games. It was at the Commonwealth Games at Edmonton in 1978 where he placed second, winning a silver medal behind world-record holder Daley Thompson. Mr Hadfield won a total of nine Australian championships in Athletics between 1976 and 1985.
He has also been voted the NSW Athlete of the Year on four occasions and is currently the president of the Olympians Club of NSW. Leeton shire residents may recognise Mr Hadfield's voice as he has worked as a commentator at the past seven Olympic and Commonwealth games competitions.
Apart from his athletic ability, Mr Hadfield has a Bachelor of Economics and has written a book � How to Get Fit While You Watch Television. He was awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia in the Australia Day Honours of 2006 and has been an ambassador for the past 18 years.
