The "speed adviser" app is an initiative of the state government with the aim of creating more awareness among motorists of school zones and speed limits.
There is no need to interact with the app at all while driving, in line with laws applying to mobile phones and GPS devices.
Leeton Shire Council road safety officer Stephanie Puntoriero said the app worked in Leeton and encouraged residents to try it out.
"The best way to avoid a speeding fine is not to speed," she said.
"However, this app acts as an additional reminder about speed limits when you are entering and exiting a school zone."
Mrs Puntoriero reminded motorists the app doesn't replace speed limit signage or judgement about conditions of an area, urging drivers to exercise caution on the road.
Member for Murrumbidgee Adrian Piccoli welcomed the release of the app.
"For those motorists who don't see school zone signs or flashing lights there is now the app will literally tell you via an audio warning that you are entering a school zone," he said. "The app alerts drivers when a speed limit changes and warns drivers if they exceed the speed limit.
"School zone safety has reached another historic milestone with the NSW government also calling for tenders to build the new flashing lights that will be rolled out to all schools in NSW still waiting for a set."
The app can be downloaded for free from the app store.
