School zones will again be in place from Tuesday.
Highway Patrol Sergeant Steve Mallam said it was crucial for motorists to pay attention.
“As school resumes and speed zones and parking laws around schools come into effect, remember to create a safe environment for our children to get to and from school,” he said.
“Observe the road rules, obey speed limits, be patient and be aware of driver distractions.
“Police will be patrolling school zones to enforce speeding, parking restrictions and illegal road user behaviour.”
School zones are in place to not only protect children in the area, but drop off and pick up times are also known to be extremely busy, which can result in accidents.
Leeton Shire Council road safety officer Kym Snow said travelling at lower speeds helped drivers prepare for unexpected pedestrian or other driver behaviour around our schools.
“Drivers need to be particularly careful and look out for children riding bikes, crossing roads, getting off buses and getting out of vehicles,” she said.
“Being cautious and slowing down won’t make much difference to your travel time, but it could save a child’s life.
“If necessary, leave home a little earlier so you have extra time to find a parking space around the school.
“It’s your responsibility to keep the roads safe.”
