The survey found that business conditions in the Murray-Riverina region were challenging, with fewer businesses optimistic about the state’s economic performance than in previous quarters.
However, while the business climate remains tough for many year-round, it’s not all bad news, with one third reporting an increase in sales revenue.
Retail store Deez owner Debbie Dickinson said there were other issues at play.
“My main problem at the moment is it’s still hot, so it’s making it hard to sell winter stock,” she said.
“Everything else seems pretty good at the moment.”
The survey reported businesses weren’t optimistic about the state’s economic performance.
Leeton Mitre 10 owner Grant Johnstone said the feel around a federal election did sometimes come with negative connotations.
“I don’t think there has been a significant drop in (business) confidence though,” he said.
“There does seem to be a bit happening, but that’s not saying it hasn’t been tough.
“What many businesses are trying to do now is cut costs.
“I know for us that has meant changing our lighting to save electricity.
“Everyone is doing what they can.”
Businesses remain hopeful the federal budget on Tuesday will provide some relief in terms of tax and spending plans.
