Held in Sydney recently, three Leeton High students – Madeline Warburton, Josh Baulch and Jonte Schmetzer – all travelled to compete at the state level.
Madeline has been a regular at the competition and has previously come away with gold in the senior girls javelin category.
This year she placed second and came home with the silver medal.
Madeline threw a distance of 40.83 metres, which earned her the silver.
It was the third consecutive time Madeline has represented the school at the state carnival.
However, she thought she could have still clinched gold this year had it been for more training.
“Definitely,” she said.
“I didn’t do too much in the lead up.”
Leeton High teacher Sarah Turner congratulated Madeline on her efforts.
“As she’s just about to finish year 12, it’s her last year of competition,” Turner said.
“She has done so well for so many years.
“It is a real credit to her and the hard work she puts in.”
For year 9 student Josh, he also enjoyed solid success at the event. He competed in the 15 years 800-metres, as well as the 1500-metres.
Josh achieved a personal best in the 1500m with a time of four minutes and 18 seconds, which earned him fifth place.
In the 800-metres not only did he achieve a personal best time of 2.02.06 minutes, but he also placed third to earn himself the bronze medal.
Jonte qualified for four events at the carnival – the 800-metres, 400-metres, triple jump and javelin. In each event he achieved personal results.
In the 400m that was a time of 53.24 seconds, a throw of 40.23m in the javelin, 11.7m in the triple jump and 2.20.15 minutes in the 800m.
Jonte said the results exceeded his expectations and said the level of competition was high.
He said he would like to continue on with Athletics after he finishes school and is interested in a sports-related degree at university.
LHS has been home to many talented students in athletics over the years.
“I think it also stems from Leeton’s Little Athletics program being so successful as well,” Turner said.
