While the area has been widely known to have its problems and concerns, residents believe it does tend to be blown out of proportion.
Last week there was an assault and small drug bust at “the hill”, but resident Karen Ingram-Johnson has noticed improvement.
“I think sometimes it does get a bit of a ‘bad rap’, but it seems to be associated with the past than anything else,” she said.
“There are things that happen out here, but those things do happen in town as well. I certainly feel safe living here.
“I just think it’s the reputation it’s gotten over the years.
“I’ve lived here for about five years, but my parents were here for a long time before that.
“There’s definitely been improvement.”
Mrs Ingram-Johnson said increased police patrols and extra street lighting would help to continue improving the area.
“I certainly understand the police are busy, but having a few extra patrols would be good because what they are doing already is working,” she said.
“We’d also love to see the police involved in our community events out here … a lot of people would just see officers arresting people and not realise the good work they do.” Other residents that wished to remain anonymous remarked Wattle Hill was a unique community on its own.
“People do look out for each other,” one resident said. “It’s always had its issues … I don’t feel unsafe here.” The Leeton Neighbourhood Watch committee was also wanting to increase its presence in Wattle Hill.
Vice-president Craig Willis said the group would also like to see more street lighting.
“I think that would definitely help in bringing some of the crime down,” he said.
“Particularly if you’ve got it in some of those ‘hot spot’ areas that are dark now.
“The police have been really good in keeping us up-to-date with what happens out there and in town as well. We would certainly welcome anyone from Wattle Hill to be part of our group.
“It’s the community that are there and know what is happening better than anyone else.” Wattle Hill residents have been encouraged to contact police if and when they notice any suspicious behaviour.
