Residents have been warned to take it easy when travelling over the Australia Day period to help ensure the town doesn’t have to endure any more horror after two truck drivers died earlier this month outside of Whitton.
With many people out celebrating or taking a long weekend, Leeton Shire Council’s road safety and traffic officer Stephanie Puntoriero warned it was better to be safe than sorry.
She said double demerits apply from midnight on Wednesday until midnight on Sunday.
“All motorists should take care when travelling over this period as the roads will be busy,” she said.
“Don’t risk losing your licence. Double demerits will be enforced for speeding, not wearing a seatbelt and or motorcycle helmet.
“Speed was a contributing factor in over 28 per cent of all Leeton crashes (last year) and fatigue is on the rise, contributing to 13 per cent of all crashes in Leeton in the last five years.
“No one plans to have a crash. By planning your journey and building in regular rest breaks you can safely arrive at your destination without speeding or driving when tired.”
Driver reviver sites will be operating throughout the region and NSW over the Australia Day holiday period, providing motorists the opportunity to take a break and have a free cuppa and a chat before getting back on the road.
