Leeton Greens club president Bill Arnold noticed some seating being auctioned off and decided to put in a couple of bids.
“I’d seen the ad on TV that Parramatta Stadium was going to be demolished,” Arnold said.
“I jumped onto their website and saw they had seating available and I thought I’d take a chance on these seats.
“I put two bids in on 200 seats each.”
Concerned about the interest, Arnold wasn’t sure how it would go, but luck was on his side.
“I won the 400 seats and it cost $20 plus about $2.80 for the online bidding fee,” Arnold said.
Seats secured, Arnold’s next mission was organizing transportation back to Leeton.
He put the request out to Ralph and Mick Ierano of Market Express and Ierano was happy to oblige.
“I said ‘mate I need a favour’ and told him what we’re doing here”, Arnold said.
“He said there and then ‘no worries mate, I’ll bring them back for free.’
“Ralph and Mick were great helping us get the seats back here.”
Arnold organised work parties on either end to remove and re-install the seating and was pleased to have so many put their hands up to help out.
“We’ve had about 20 people on and off through out the day, the council guys and Dave Steven was always right there to help out,” Arnold said.
Thanks to equal measures of hard work, perfect timing and luck, fans will have a great place to sit and enjoy sport at the town ovals for years to come.
The Leeton Greens worked with Leeton Shire Council to improve footpaths and access to and from the change rooms over the past several weeks.
