Now think about what it would be like to have an abortion and a whole other range of emotions start flooding in. 

On top of that – you learn that just last week the NSW MPs voted down a Greens bill aimed at overturning a 100-year-old law that states abortion is a crime. 

That’s correct, that vote occurred last week. 

Sure, there’s still many out there in the community that would view abortion as being wrong or against their beliefs, but for it to still be viewed as a crime in this state is surely backward thinking. 

Public members in the gallery shouted “shame” as the result of the conscience vote was announced in the Legislative Council last week and many outside of that room would certainly agree. 

Considering this act a crime in NSW in today’s day and age is absolute rubbish. 

Women choosing to have an abortion can’t just waltz in and do so. 

There are certain procedures and counselling in place for these women and I’m sure many never make the decision lightly.

It’s also one that sticks with them for life even if a “child” is aborted in the very early weeks. 

Women deserve far more than this. 

This issue deserves to be treated with respect and dignity. 

There are certain laws in place to ensure when an abortion is performed it is done so before an embryo is clinically referred to as a human life. 

For years and years the debate has raged about whether an abortion is right or wrong.

There’s no doubt that will continue for years to come. 

However, women deserve the right to make their decision freely.

Most in this position would already have feelings of guilt, sorrow, sadness and even regret. 

For them to also know they are committing a crime, which according to that theory makes them a criminal, is only adding fuel to the fire. 

For some women they have no other option. Think about the woman or young girl who has become pregnant after being raped. What is the government hoping to achieve in these cases? 

This vote should have been a “no-brainer”, but instead it has been shown how backwards NSW is in its thinking when it comes to these issues. Something needs to change.
