The Leeton Public School student recently enjoyed blitzing the field at the school’s athletics carnival, breaking not one, but two long-standing records.
After competing in numerous categories on the day, the year 5 student saved her best performance for her last two events of the day.
The first was in the high jump where she cleared 1.26 metres, breaking the 1.23 metres held by Amy Evans since 1996.
Next up was the long jump where there were some nervous moments.
“My first jump was a foul,” Emily said.
“The next one I did 3.80, which I thought was pretty good.”
The previous record for that event had been held for a huge 26 years by Joanne Peters who jumped 3.75 metres back in 1990.
“It was a pretty good feeling for me,” Emily said.
“In the high jump all of the year 6 girls were cheering me on when I got over the bar and broke the record.
“That was pretty cool.
“I knew with the long jump that I should do well. I can jump four metres.”
Emily is a member of the Leeton Little Athletics Club and enjoys taking part in different aspects of the sport.
She will now move on to represent the school at the Leeton/Narrandera PSSA district competition.
