Carlo Luisi has been pushing for more than 10 years for Leeton to have a drag racing strip and the plans are now starting to come together.
A burnout pad, to be located on an empty field between the Leeton Motorcycle Club and Leeton Aerodrome Club, would be the first project on the agenda.
With extra funding it would then be followed by a drag racing strip with the hopes of having it one day becoming a big event for the town, even rivalling the Summernats.
Mr Luisi also hopes it would attract regular drag racing meets.
Over the weekend it was reported by The Area News of a group of Griffith residents wanting their own burnout pad.
“That’s not something we’re worried about … that’s up to them,” Mr Luisi said.
“We’ve already got the land available and the funding is happening as well.”
Mr Luisi will be meeting with Leeton Shire Council and the various organisations that sit alongside the available land on Thursday to further discuss the project.
He was hopeful everyone would be able to come to an agreement on where the burnout pad and drag strip could be located within the available space.
Mr Luisi said he continued to have good support from the community regarding the idea.
Residents have jumped on board in the hopes of getting racing back to the area after several successful meetings were held at the Narrandera-Leeton Airport over the years.
“The message we want to get out there is the burnout pad won’t be constructed and then left there like a skate park,” Mr Luisi said.
“It’s going to be a controlled environment when it is used … people will have to pay, insurance will be covered, first aid and all of that kind of thing. After that it will be locked up.
“It won’t be for people to go and use whenever they want. That’s not safe.”
