Students were on hand to take part in National Tree Day last Friday with the help of Leeton Toyota. 

Every child was given their own native shrub to plant on the school’s grounds during the day. 

Two fruit trees were also planted in the school’s vegetable patch complementing others already growing in that area.

Yanco Public School acting principal Tarnya Grigg said students had been eager to take part. 

“As well as the actual planting and taking part on the day, it creates more of a discussion of needing to have a healthy environment wherever you are,” she said. 

“Having the native shrubs shows you need to be conscious of your environment and how to look after it as well. 

“The kids all had a great time. 

“Each of them were given their own tree to plant.”

National Tree Day is held each year and is an opportunity to do something positive for the environment and community, as well as reconnecting with nature. 

Clare Hillman and Johnathan Edwards from Leeton Toyota were pleased the students were so on board with the idea as part of the recent event. 

“This was (our) first year organising and participating in National Tree Day, and we left Yanco feeling inspired as the students were passionate about the environmental issues,” Ms Hillman said.
