New figures from the NSW Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research show a decrease in domestic violence incidents in regional NSW.
The numbers show their were 60 domestic violence-related assaults in Leeton that were reported to police in the 12 months to June, 2016.
In the same period to June this year, there were 56.
While it’s only a slight decrease, it does reflect a steady decline in domestic violence offences elsewhere in the state.
NSW Police Commissioner Mick Fuller said communities were now more aware and were responding in a different manner to these offences.
“NSW Police have been extremely proactive targeting offenders of domestic violence,” he said.
Residents have been encouraged to continue to raise awareness of domestic violence and, if they are a victim, to speak out and report matters to police.
There was also another small difference in the number of break and enters at homes in properties, with 83 recorded incidents for the 2016 period and 79 in the current 12-month timeframe.
The biggest major crime category for Leeton shire with the most amount of recorded incidents was again malicious damage to property.
For the 12 months to June this year there were 118 offences compared to 133 in the 2016 time period.
There were 72 non-domestic violence-related assaults recorded.
