With this in mind, year 10 students from St Francis College recently spent two weeks on the job completing work experience at a variety of Leeton businesses and organisations.
Students tried everything from hairdressing, mechanics and public relations to child care, fitness and teaching.
College careers adviser Michelle Wood said students were involved in the process from start to finish.
“Students have been proactive in organising their own work placement,” she said.
“They all had to contact the employer of choice and ask for an opportunity to do some work experience with them.
“I would like to thank all the businesses who have constantly supported our programs.
“The feedback on all the students have been so positive.”
One of those to participate was Callum Ryan, who spent time at St Joseph’s Primary School.
“St Joseph’s was a great experience for me,” he said.
“I had to help the teachers around the school and teach the students in stage two (year 3 and 4) and stage 3 (year 5 and 6).
“We got to play games and sport and I watched them practice their dances for their concert coming up soon.
“They're so well behaved and I really enjoyed learning to teach these past two weeks.”
For Charlie Reilly, she chose to look closer to home and decided she wanted to learn just what her mother does on a day-to-day basis at her company – Lynsey Reilly Communications (LRC).
“I spent my time learning about public relations and events,” she said.
“I was lucky enough to fly to Sydney to attend the NSW Business Chamber State awards and see all the amazing businesses that made it to state level as finalists.
“During my time at LRC, I worked on a photo shoot, a client event and learned about social media and how a business can use it to develop relationships with target customers.” Other students reported being able to learn by completing a number of activities, as well as taking part in a variety of hands on tasks. The majority of the year 10 students at St Francis will be returning to the classroom next year to start working towards their Higher School Certificate.
