Miss Brett is one of four entrants in the festival’s Ambassador Quest along with Isabella Mercuri, Jay Bloomfield and Zoe Cherry.
She was born and bred in Leeton and is currently a primary school teacher at Parkview Public School.
After studying and then teaching in Canberra at the completion of her degree, Miss Brett decided to make the move home.
“Leeton’s always been my home … I’ve had a great year being back and now I’m really excited to be part of the Ambassador Quest,” she said.
Parkview Public is the committee behind Miss Brett, with her chosen charity being Leeton Can Assist.
“Parkview have tried for a while to get an Ambassador in, and coming back from living in the city and being a Leeton girl, they approached me and I took it on all guns blazing,” Miss Brett said.
“I’ve always taken notice of the quest and I’ve seen others do, I’ve had friends do it, so when they asked I was happy to have a go.
“I chose Can Assist as my charity because I know how much work they do for cancer patients in Leeton.
“It’s very much a charity that is close to home for me. Having my mum who has been sick with breast cancer … Can Assist have given to her, so I definitely wanted to give back to them.”
Miss Brett has already kicked off her fundraising efforts as part of the quest, which was officially launched on November 30.
She’s hosted a barbecue at the recent men’s and women’s touch grand finals, as well as holding a stall at the weekend’s Light Up Leeton event.
A number of events are in the works for the new year, including an Australia Day Twenty20 cricket bash for both men and women, with a 100 club on the same day.
Other fundraisers will include a street stall this Saturday, a golf day, high tea, trivia nights and a “day on the green” type event at Lillypilly Estate Winery.
“We’re trying to do something for everyone … especially being the school, we’re hoping to do plenty of stuff for kids as well,” Miss Brett said.
“I have a fantastic committee behind me.
“Lots of support from my teaching peers and our P&C are also so willing to help.”
Miss Brett was hoping the quest would allow her the opportunity to give back.
“Ultimately, I just want to give back to the community,” she said.
“They have given so much to me and my family, so this is my chance to do that.”
