THERE may have been fewer ponies on the track on Friday night than we had seen at the two previous meetings, but the enthusiasm of drivers more than made up for the reduction in numbers.

Leeton Mini Trotters competed once more at their home track for the Leeton HRC Breeders Plate Heats Night on Friday, January 12 and after the weather looking a little doubtful, it was a much milder evening to be out and made for an enjoyable night of entertainment.
The ponies started prior to the big horses’ first race and contested three events for the evening.
The Murrumbidgee Lucerne Pace saw the debut of recently qualified pony Berry’d Treasure for Siarne Deeves and also marks the midget’s first win for her career much to the delight of her fans trackside!
Jed Driscoll steered Nanna Smoke into second, and stable mate Little Secret clung on to score a third with Danika Stevens in the gig.
The handicapper did some serious calculating prior to the ponies taking to the track for Race Two, and this resulted in a win for the latest acquisition to the Smith stable Betty’s Boy with capable young driver Layla Forest in charge.
Junee pony and driver combination, Eliza Turton and Little Princess finished second and Jed lit up the track once more with Nanna Smoke taking third place in the Mick’s Fabrications Trot.
With the smallest legs ever, Little Midget needed a heavy duty handicap to have a chance in the final race for the night.
The handicapper did what he needed to do to ensure those little legs led all the way, and Shaiila Ogilvie came away with a win!
Little Secret crossed the line behind her, and Betty’s Boy managed third place to finish off the evening.
Regular driver Nikkita Smith was missed – all at LMTC wish her a swift recovery and return to the track after a dog incident last week.
Stick with the ponies Nikkita!
Next meet at Leeton will be on Breeders Plate Final Night, which also happens to be Australia Day, and a big turn-out is expected, both on and off the track.
Drivers wishing to compete on this night must nominate their ponies to Barry Pitt early in the week.
