Sounds too good to be true? It may not have to be if it’s Whitton where you choose to build your new home.
Leeton Shire Council recently announced it had endorsed a parcel of land in Conapaira Street to be opened up for new homes to be constructed.
What has resulted has been a substantial amount of interest which could help the MIA’s oldest town to flourish once more.
Bill Arnold from Hotondo Homes in Leeton said the idea could save a potential buyer thousands of dollars.
“They’re talking about selling these blocks of land for $25,000 to $30,000, which compared to buying a block of land in Leeton or Griffith, is a bargain,” the building veteran said.
“In Leeton blocks are going for about $90,000 or sometimes more, so compared to that you’re looking at having an extra $50,000 to $60,000 to put into your home if you’re buying one of these blocks of land in Whitton.
“I think it’s a great idea. It could be for someone who’s looking to get into the market, maybe a first home buyer. There’s certainly a fair few people who commute each day to Griffith or the cotton gin, even Darlington Point. It’s definitely got a lot of potential for those sorts of people.”
A poll from The Irrigator recently asked readers whether or not they would consider buying a block of land in Whitton and building a home.
Ninety people said it was an option they would consider, while 88 believed it wasn’t for them.
A further 19 were unsure.
One person who isn’t unsure about the idea is Whitton Town Improvement Committee chairman Tracy Catlin, who said interest in the blocks of land was growing.
“I don’t think it’s going to happen straight away, but it’s great to have people talking about it and interested in the plans,” she said.
“There’s barely any other blocks here in Whitton for people to build on at the moment, so it’s a big opportunity.
“If people are building or buying here it’s definitely for the quieter lifestyle.
“It could certainly lead to bigger things for the town, which is great.”
The residential subdivision proposal will be a central element of the Whitton Town Improvement Plan that will be further developed early this year.
