Mrs Jay is gearing up to take part in the World’s Greatest Shave next month and it’s the support of the community she is after.
Having already raised her target goal of $1000 she is now hoping to double it before she shaves her hair off on March 16 at the Hairy Corner from 10am.
Growing her hair for the shave has been a three-year process, helped along by her hairdresser Toni Lamont.
“This is the longest my hair has ever been,” the eager fundraiser said.
“It needs to be 20 centimetres in length to be able to be donated for wigs.
“I’ve always been involved in fundraising, but this time I wanted to do something that was more related to families and children and supporting them, particularly those in regional areas.”
This year marks the 20th anniversary of the World’s Greatest Shave, a milestone Mrs Jay was thrilled to be taking part in.
The idea behind the event each year is to raise money for the Leukemia Foundation, which is the only national charity dedicated to helping more Australians with leukaemia, lymphoma, myeloma and related disorders survive their blood cancer and live a better quality of life.
For Mrs Jay, she believes it is an important cause to support.
“They (the foundation) have been so supportive … if anyone is thinking about taking part they definitely give it a go.
“Most of my life my hair has been short. I’m going to have a number one, so that’s the shortest it will have ever been, but I’m not nervous.”

Over the years many Leeton shire residents have taken part in the World’s Greatest Shave and the event shows no signs of slowing down. Mrs Jay works at the Leeton Preschool with a coloured hair fundraiser in the works to add to her final total.
“I’ve got my head band ready to go after the shave,” she said. “It will be interesting to see how the kids react, it might take some getting used to.
“It’s something I’ve always wanted to do, it was just fitting it in.” To donate look up Mrs Jay’s Facebook page. Cash donations are also accepted.
