As part of Harmony Day, Leeton shire residents of all ages and nationalities joined together to mark not only what makes each person unique, but the idea as human everyone has something in common.
Harmony Day is a day to celebrate Australian multiculturalism, based on the successful integration of migrants into communities across the country.
With more than 60 community members in attendance, the Leeton Harmony Day celebrations encompassed inclusiveness, respect and a sense of belonging for everyone.
Mayor Paul Maytom, who is also the the chairman of the Leeton Multicultural Group, was pleased to see a diverse group of community members come together in celebration of friendship.
“Harmony Day is all about inclusiveness, respect and belonging for all Australians, regardless of cultural or linguistic background, united by a set of core Australian values,” he said.
“I’m also very proud of the fact Leeton shire is a Refugee Welcome Zone.
“In reaching this status council has made a commitment in spirit to welcoming refugees into the community, upholding the human rights of refugees, demonstrating compassion for refugees and enhancing cultural and religious diversity in the community.”
According to the 2016 Census there are over 30 different ancestral cultures in Leeton.
The Leeton library also recently celebrated Harmony Day with over 50 children, parents and carers attending a multicultural-themed storytime.
