IT HAS been close to three decades since the last new motel rooms were built in Leeton.
The last time the town had new motel accommodation built was when the facility that recently created the three newest rooms - The Leeton Heritage Motor Inn - opened 28 years ago.
In fact, this is part of an “unprecedented” expansion of the motel.
As well as opening three new rooms - converted from a previously underutilised function space - in the lead up to the Easter weekend, the Heritage also has three more undergoing construction.
Proprietor Wayne Bond said “crazy” demand made it an easy decision to expand the motel.
“We’ve been at the motel for 14 months,” Mr Bond said.
"We have spent the last 12 years in motels around the country and this is the most consistently busy we have been.
“The motel had a meeting room attached to the restaurant that was underutilised.
“We kept turning people away so decided to convert the space to three new rooms.”
Two of the completed rooms are top-of-the-line "executive king spa suites”, featuring a king-sized bed, large-screen high definition smart TV with Foxtel and "eco" spa, an environmentally friendly single-person spa that uses no more water than a normal bath.
“They are by far the best rooms anywhere,” Mr Bond said. “They are self-contained to an extent and have all the bells and whistles.”
Three existing rooms have also been upgraded, to create three more executive queen suites.
Work started on building another three new rooms last month, two of which will be fully disabled accessible.
“It was part of council’s requirement that they had to be fully accessible for all people,” Mr Bond said.
“The motel did have one older disabled room, although it did not meet current regulations. It will be converted to a standard queen room.”

As well as upgrading existing rooms with new air-conditioners and interior touches, work at the motel has also included a full renovation of the Charley’s Bar and Restaurant area.
These current works may not be the end of the motel’s expansion.
“There is room to grow further if we need to,” Mr Bond said.
“For us it is good to be full night after night, but it’s not for customers you have to turn away.
“People are looking for a four-star level room and there are none in the area.
“That means they have to travel to Griffith, which is not good for the town and it means other businesses in town miss out
“So, there is scope and there are plans to expand should the need be there.”
Outstanding facility for Leeton
THE Leeton Heritage Motor Inn will have 32 rooms in total once building works are complete, with 29 currently operational.
All rooms have a new split-system air-conditioner, microwave, bar fridge and tea and coffee facilities, as well as Foxtel. There is free WiFi throughout the property.
The motel is also home to Charley’s Bar and Restaurant, which is open to the public Monday to Thursday nights, and private functions on weekends and during the day through the week.
There is also a pool and barbecue area and an outdoor function space.
“This motel is a standout from anything we’ve done in the last 12 years,” proprietor Wayne Bond said. “There is a consistent business level.
“Leeton is a lovely town, especially after experiencing our first SunRice Festival here.”
