The overwhelming response from residents was one of delight and joy last week when the popular chain store announced it would be opening its doors in Griffith following the closure of Big W.
Kmart in recent years has almost earned a cult following among buyers, particularly woman thanks to its homewares range and items at bargain prices.
Ever since Big W announced it would be closing its doors, rumours began circulating Kmart would be coming to Griffith to fill the space left.
While the chain store is yet to announce where it will set up shop, the business has confirmed it will open late in 2018.
“We are excited to formally announce that Kmart Australia will be opening in Griffith in late 2018 and we will begin recruitment for more than 100 team members over the coming months,” a Kmart spokeswoman said.

However, some residents have questioned the impacts the store’s opening will have on retail businesses in Leeton.
“Good bye local shoppers,” wrote Paul Rook on The Irrigator’s Facebook page.
However, the response to the announcement from Leeton shoppers was mostly positive and even met with excitement.
“It's dangerous having Kmart so close I'm going to be broke,” joked Scott Whittaker.
The Leeton Chamber of Commerce and Industry encourages all residents to shop local first.
