REFLECTING on sacrifices made from Australia’s early combat days to modern times is the order of the day at Leeton’s many Anzac Day services next week.

It may be a public holiday, but residents have been urged to spend the day wisely and pay their respects to veterans past and present.
It was announced this week by RSL NSW it would be putting female veterans at the front of its metropolitan Anzac Day marches in order to change the public’s perspective of them.
Many female veterans who march on Anzac Day have reported people coming up to them and telling them to move their medals from the left side to the right side.
This is due to those people not believing these females are veterans, but are perhaps just wearing their grandfather’s medals.
Leeton RSL Sub-branch president John Power said it was an idea he supported, but he wasn’t sure how many female veterans would turn out.
“We know our eldest female veteran won’t be marching this year, because she has hurt her knee, but we certainly encourage any younger female veterans or those still serving to come along and be part of the services,” he said.
“My daughter served in the Army reserves for 10 years and she has comments like that all the time about her medals.”
Anzac Day has fallen in the school holidays in 2018, but Mr Power was still hopeful the shire’s students would still be marching.
All residents have been urged to attend at least one of the services.
“Numbers at the dawn service have grown … I think people find it to be more personal,” Mr Power said.
