When it came to choosing the perfect hat for race day, five-year-old Oliver Walsh had something special in mind. Taking out the gong for Best Dressed Boy, he said he chose the hat because it looked like his “Poppy Pete”, Leeton trainer Peter Clancy owned and wore.

“We saw Poppy Pete’s horses and he got a winner,” he said.
The youngest Fashions of the Field winner was pretty pleased with his own win as well, though he admitted he had a little help from his proud mum.
“I got a voucher and a sash.”
Oliver and his family were part of a crowd of over 1000 people who came out to attend the Leeton races over the weekend.
The Leeton Cup was taken out by seven year-old gelding Biding Time, trained by Albury’s Andrew Dale. Prize money for first place came it at $7,350.
Leeton Jockey Club President Grant Fitzsimon was more than happy with the day’s turnout.
“We’ve had an excellent day. The crowd looks up on previous years so that’s great,” he said.

With a late cold snap hitting Leeton on Friday, he says there were concerns about whether the sun would make an appearance – but things pulled through.
“We’ve been pretty happy with the competition in the fields. Overall, the day has been pretty good,” he said.

He thanked the hard work and ongoing support of the Jockey Club committee, sponsors and volunteers.
Aside from the race track, Leeton’s Fashions on the Field also shone, with prizes offered across seven categories.
