The Golden Apple Super Store had two of its varieties win first place at the southern regional finals of the 2018 NSW/ACT Best Butchers Beef Burger Competition.
The supermarket’s lamb burgers took out first prize in the gourmet section, while the butchery team also took out the top spot in the best beef burgers category.
Head butcher Franky Fiumara was stoked with the effort.
“We go to the state titles in Homebush in Sydney now … you submit the product again for judging and if you win that you go on to nationals,” he said.
“The judges said they tasted beautiful and they’ve never had anything like it before.”
Making the effort more special for Franky was the family ties to the recipes for the patties.
“A bloke that used to work here – Paul Preston and my (late) dad came up with the ingredients in 1994 I think, so it’s pretty special,” Mr Fiumara said.
“I reckon he would be pretty proud.”
With burgers and big ones at that becoming increasingly popular, the head butcher was pleased to see residents having a healthy appetite for the product.
“Each year in Australia now there’s a big amount of sausages and rissoles being sold … they are affordable options,” he said.
