The Big Lift Group is a student-run volunteering organisation from the University of Technology, with a “pay it forward” motto.
Each July they do a week long road trip to rural and regional towns, offering to perform community service, and lend a hand.
We have several projects lined up for them, and look forward to welcoming them.
One of those projects is helping a local artist, who is undertaking the big task, of restoring the painted power pole artworks that had been commissioned by the then Whitton Tidy Towns Committee over 10 years ago.
The Community Hall will also be receiving a helping hand of their services.
Whitton will shortly see the installation of a 3D interactive piece of the artwork from the “Lyrics, Landscapes and Lintels” project.
This is one of five public artworks for Leeton Shire, which has been funded by The Heritage Near Me Activation Grant, from the Office of Environment and Heritage.
The artwork for Whitton is by artist Carla Gottgens.
Called Charred Memory, it will consist of laser cut, powder coated panels of art, as well as written pieces that will tell some of the early story of Whitton.
This artwork, once complete, will be placed in its original earmarked location of the Memorial Park.
After checking the final measurements, the other proposed location in the Main Street had to be ruled out.
Once completed it should look rather impressive.
