Last week The Big Lift program paid a visit to the town to give it a bit of a sprucing up.
The volunteers were from the University of Technology in Sydney who signed up to take part in the work in Whitton, as well as in other regional areas.
Having boarded a bus from Sydney, the group weren’t sure what they were in for, according to representative Lucy Day-Williams.
“A lot of the students sign up because they want to give back and help out in regional areas,” she said.
“Many of them have never been out to places like Whitton before, let alone heard of these towns.
“It’s a great experience for them.”
Upon their arrival in Whitton on July 8, the group were greeted by residents who had cooked them dinner for the night.
The town’s community hall was their accommodation for the night and they were up bright and early the following day to get their projects underway.

This included cleaning and preparing eight power poles for upcoming art murals, clearing out the community hall for the laquering of floor boards and working at the Whitton museum, to tear out the old vegetable garden, moving logs and old timber, weeding and helping re-organise inside.
“The Whitton community was so supportive and really happy to have us there,” she said.
“We can’t thank them enough for having us.
“Our volunteers really had their eyes opened and got a lot out of it. Hopefully what we completed helped.”
