However, that won’t be the case in Leeton shire for the immediate future, with town water allocation still sitting at 100 per cent.
Leeton Shire Council’s interim director of environment and engineering Chris Watson said there was no need to place restrictions on the amount of water being used by residents.
“No, water restrictions are not currently required (for Leeton shire),” he said.
“(The decision is made based on) a correlation between water usage and town allocations, which are currently at 100 per cent.
“On current town water usage patterns, town allocations would need to drop to around 60 per cent to trigger any potential water restrictions.”
However, with many farmers and towns in NSW suffering from the drought, one resident, who wished to be anonymous, said saving water was something community members should be thinking about.
“The drought is devastating farmers, towns and communities not that far from Leeton,” the concerned resident said.
“I think anything we could do to help or just show some solidarity, would be appreciated.”

During the last “big drought”, which was from the late 1990s into the 2000s, Leeton was placed on water restrictions for many years.
However, this hasn’t been the case since following much more regular rainfall across the catchments and the Leeton shire area.
There has also been cases of severe flooding in the region since that time.
Mr Watson said he wasn’t aware of any inquiries from either the general public or councillors regarding whether or not restrictions should be in place.
However, he did encourage the community to be wise with their water usage and do their part to save the precious source where possible.
