To achieve this, there will need to be some changes, and residents’ patience will be required. “Basically the community has told us they want to see police out in the community more whether it’s patrolling or the like,” Chief Inspector Wadsworth said. 

“This is what we are going to be doing, but in may mean in some cases there won’t be an officer to see you if you come to the Leeton station or there may not be an officer there to answer the phone. 

“I want to urge people to call the Police Assistance Line on 131 444 if it is not an emergency. This will all come back to us to handle. 

“If it is an emergency, don’t hesitate to dial Triple Zero.

“It doesn’t have to be a house is on fire, it could be you’ve seen a break and enter happen or a prowler in your yard. Calling Triple Zero will get an officer there immediately.”

Chief Inspector Wadsworth was hopeful the community would understand the need for police to balance their time using the resources they have available.

He reassured the community the station would do its best to have its doors open to the public. 

During Wednesday night’s Leeton Shire Council ordinary monthly meeting, councillor Paul Smith praised the recent changes at the station. 

“I had a matter where I needed to speak with police … I called the Leeton station, spoke with someone here and within 10 minutes it was all sorted,” he said.
