Despite the continued dry spell, we have had some rain the last couple of weeks. With that comes the growing of grass and the potential for you furry friends to have complications from grass seeds. Some complications could be a grass seed may get caught in the eye, causing irritation and maybe even creating an ulcer on the eye which can not only be quite painful but possibly cause a loss of sight.
A grass seed can poke into the skin between the toes, making it painful to walk on that foot or even just poke into the skin anywhere on the body, especially if your pet likes to roll around in the grass. This may lead to a nasty abscess, that needs to be treated surgically. Other complications could be the grass seed gets caught in the ear leading to an ear infection or could even get caught up their nose, causing irritation and making your animal sneeze to try to get it out.
Another thing that you should be aware of with the warmer weather coming is those pesky fleas. Fleas will try and find a warm body to get onto and have a little feed. Once a flea has a feed, the female flea can lay hundreds and even thousands of eggs at one time. This can lead to an infestation quite quickly and is very hard to get under control, especially since most of the fleas in the environment are in the form of eggs. Eggs are harder to kill even with flea preventatives and may take months to fully eradicate once they are in your house. So come on down and talk to the lovely staff at Leeton Veterinary Hospital about the right type of flea preventative for your pet.
