AFTER a hiatus of sorts, the MIA basketball league is back with a vengeance in 2018.
The last time the competition was held was in 2015 where the Leeton women’s side finished champions and the men’s team was runners-up.
In 2018 the league will not only be contested by Leeton, Griffith and Narrandera, but sides from West Wyalong will also be taking part.
The competition starts on October 6 and will run through until November 10.
Leeton’s sides started their training this week and competition co-ordinator Maddy Clyne was keen to see the teams perform well.
“It’s been about three years since the last competition was held,” she said.
“What I’m finding out is it takes a lot of organisation, but I’m really glad it’s back again this year.
“Having West Wyalong in it as well adds a bit more.
“That came about because I knew a girl in Wagga who played basketball and she’s since moved to West Wyalong.
“They’ve gotten their teams together, they’ve got sponsors and all of that kind of thing, so they are ready to go.”
The round robin competition will start on October 6 with Leeton playing Griffith first up.
Matches will be held each weekend after that before the grand finals between the top two sides from the men’s and women’s division on November 17.
Clyne is hopeful the competition will spark a resurgence in senior basketball in Leeton.
“I’d love to get a senior comp started here in Leeton like they have in Narrandera and Griffith already,” she said. “Hopefully the interest is there.”
