IN THIS week’s profile of a Leeton District Hospital nurse, The Irrigator had a chance to gain an insight into the career of Coral Kenny, who works in Carramar.
Mrs Kenny always wanted to become a nurse having grown up around elderly people and her grandparents were also a big influence on her life.
“I don’t regret it one moment, it’s been good to me,” she said.
“You meet so many lovely people.
“Even down the street you’ll see people and you’ve looked after their mums and dads and they still remember you.
“That’s the good part of it.”
Mrs Kenny has been nursing for close to four decades.
She started out at Leeton District Hospital, with the construction of Carramar only just starting on her arrival.
“I worked in the hospital upstairs, but I’ve been in Carramar for a while now,” Mrs Kenny said.
“I left for a bit, but I came back. I’m lucky with my (training) because it’s allowed me to travel but also come back and work here.”
Mrs Kenny, while still being a nurse, is now also one of the activities co-ordinators at Carramar.
In this role she comes up with events and ideas for residents in the aged care facility to be involved with.
Just this week the residents were making creations to enter into the upcoming Leeton Show.
She said there were many parts to the job she enjoyed, but the downsides included shift work, travelling each day to Leeton (Mrs Kenny lives in Darlington Point) and losing a resident.
“You don’t ever get used to losing someone … you know it’s part of the job but it doesn’t get any easier,” Mrs Kenny said.
“I find the shift work a bit hard, especially since I’m getting older. But I do love my job, so the good does outweigh the bad.
“It’s like a big family here.”
Mrs Kenny said nursing wasn’t always a career path at the of young women and men’s lives in today’s day and age, but she urged them to consider it.
“It’s very rewarding, but it’s also something you can do anywhere,” she said.
