SEPTEMBER typically means football finals and the feeling of spring in the air, but every second year in Leeton there’s another important event which takes centre stage.

On Wednesday, Leeton shire councillors will vote and elect their mayor and deputy mayor for the next two years.
In the past this was done every 12 months at Leeton Shire Council’s ordinary monthly meeting in September.
However, that has since changed to be every two years to allow for stability among the ranks.

This year’s election appears to be a one-horse race for both mayor and deputy mayor.
Councillor Paul Maytom is again throwing his hat in the ring for mayor, while George Weston has put his hand up for deputy once again.
Councillors Sandra Nardi, Peter Davidson, Tracey Morris, Paul Smith and Tony Ciccia all said they wouldn’t be contesting either position, while Michael Kidd and Tony Reneker were unable to be reached to see where they stood.
“We’ve got a very unified council and I believe both Paul and George are doing a good job,” Cr Ciccia said.
Cr Maytom has been in the top job for many years and, being retired, he felt he had the time to give to the job.
He said all councillors were welcome to learn about his role and the deputy position at any time so as to ensure there would be proper succession when a new mayor is elected.
Cr Reneker is also retired and, although he couldn’t be reached for comment, if he were to nominate for either position it would give councillors a new option to mull over.
Looking to the 12 months ahead, councillors agreed there was plenty of work to be done.
“It’s important we continue to apply for and access grant funding to complete a lot of our capital works … that’s what the community wants to see,” Cr Smith said.
The mayoral vote will be held on Wednesday night at the council chambers.
