MAKALIA Ciccia has always wanted to be part of the Leeton Showgirl competition, but never did she expect to actually win.
Miss Ciccia was named the 2018 Leeton Showgirl on Friday evening and it is a title she isn’t taking lightly.
“It was a surprise, I was never expecting to win, I was just happy to take part for the experience,” she said.
“I had been wanting to do it for a while, but I had always been too busy with dancing. This year I’m doing a gap year so it was my last opportunity.”
Runner-up in 2018 was Emma Gale and there was also a healthy number of entries across the junior categories on Saturday.
Showgirl competition co-ordinator Melina Mandaglio said the tradition of the event was alive and well in Leeton.
“This year it was really good because I had the two girls approach me about it,” she said.
“Sometimes you do have to try convince people to take part, so it was great to see their interest.
“The junior categories were great again. It’s great to see them all dressed up and enjoying the show.
“Makalia had a great time on the Saturday at the show sashing winners in the pavilion and the horse ring.”
Makalia will now contest the zone final in March next year, as well as attending a weekend in Dubbo in February to prepare.
“Until you take part you don’t realise how much is involved, but it’s a fantastic opportunity,” Makalia said.
“You have to do a lot of research and you learn so much about your town. I was surprised by how much I didn’t know, so it was great to be learning more about Leeton and its history.”
The showgirl competition has been running in Leeton for decades.
The competition isn’t just about how a person looks, but their knowledge of their town, how they present themselves and speak in public and much more.
