LEETON shire residents are throwing away about $73 worth of food every week.
Over the course of a year this adds up to just over $3805.
This isn’t an uncommon trend, with fellow NSW households among some of the biggest contributors of food waste in Australia, throwing away more than $10 billion worth of edible food each year.
Love Food Hate Waste NSW, an initiative run by the NSW Environment Protection Authority, is asking the community to get on board the food waste fighting journey and make some simple changes at home to help save money and the environment.
Some of the tips include planning meals and their portion size each week, as well as shopping with a list, keeping food fresh and using up leftovers.
By sticking to these simple steps, residents should see they are beginning to throw away less food, helping the environment at the same time.
