Remembrance Day will be marked on Sunday with a special service in Leeton at 10.30am, reflecting on 100 years since the signing of an armistice between the Allies and Germany, ending World War I in 1918.
A service will be held at the Leeton Cenotaph from 10.30am on Sunday and many special touches have been added this year to ensure the date doesn’t go by unnoticed.
An art installation from Natalie Power using white crosses with the names of Leeton’s 66 fallen from World War I will be placed in certain positions at the cenotaph, along with the poppies knitted by residents.
The names of the fallen will also be read aloud.
Another installation will also be created by the Leeton Girl Guides at the Leeton Soldiers Club World War II shrine.
Leeton RSL Sub-branch president John Power was hopeful many community members would attend the service.
“It is important to do so I think,” he said.
“We’re also hoping all traffic in the main street will stop once it is 11am.”
A siren will ring out from the Leeton fire station to single a minute’s silence, signifying the end of the war.
Members of the community and organisations will be invited to lay wreaths during the service, with the Last Post to be sounded.
This year the Leeton Town Band will play a part in the commemorations as part of its Outback Band Spectacular.
Once the official service is completed, residents can then head to Mountford Park where special pieces of music composed by OJ Rushton will be played and sung by school students from across the shire.
The songs to be performed will be Young and Free and Extraordinary Changes. The Last Post will also be sounded in the park and a minute’s silence observed.
Mr Power encouraged residents who are unable to attend on Sunday to observe a minute silence wherever they may be at 11am.
The RSL will also be selling poppies in the main street on Friday and on Remembrance Day.
