Last Thursday the organisation’s Regional Advisory Council for the Riverina met in Leeton to discuss just that.
The idea was to speak about issues facing migrants and refugees and the services which are available to help those people in places like Leeton.
Multicultural NSW Advisory Board member Margaret Piper chaired the meeting and said it was a good opportunity for the region to come together in support of migrants and refugees.
“What I like most about these meetings is one area may have an issue or something happening with a migrant or refugee in their city, but with the help of another town who has been through or is going through something similar, they can help each other out,” she said.
“It’s an opportunity to get together and talk about the challenges refugees and migrants face, but it’s also a time to celebrate what has been achieved and what can still be achieved.
“There is a lot of good work happening in this area and it only helps migrants and refugees to thrive and make a positive contribution to the community they are living in.
“It’s great hearing and seeing so many of the success stories of migrants or refugees who once had an uncertain future, but now that is no longer the case.”
Each Regional Advisory Council throughout the state is chaired by a Multicultural NSW board member and comprises up to eight community members and seven government members.

Ms Piper was pleased to see Leeton was continuing to make inroads when it came to welcoming migrants and refugees to town.
“Leeton has a very proud and long tradition of being a multicultural town,” she said.
“There’s no doubt there are challenges in this area, but the idea behind these meetings is to discuss those and find a resolution.
“It’s important to address the issues at a local area.”
As part of the day there were several presentations and discussions.
Joining Leeton as part of the Riverina council are local government areas such as Bland, Coolamon, Griffith, Wagga, Lockhart, Narrandera, Temora and more.
Agencies such as NSW Police, NSW Health and the Department of Premier and Cabinet are all represented on each advisory council.
