Leeton Shire Council’s draft Graffiti Management Policy is now on public exhibition for residents to comment on.
The policy outlines how incidents of graffiti and tagging should be handled in Leeton shire.
Since the start of 2017, a register of graffiti removed by council has been maintained, with 12 incidents registered in Leeton.

The vast majority of these were single “tags” and one major instance at Euroley Bridge.
Council’s director of environment and engineering Peter Keane said the policy provides staff and community partners with a clearer framework for responding to and reducing graffiti in the Leeton local government area.
“Currently council does not have any formal plan or policy when dealing with or reducing graffiti incidents,” he said.
“For a number of years council has been undertaking a graffiti removal service and the supply of graffiti removal kits free-of-charge to property owners when requested.
“There are also rewards for information that lead to a conviction of graffiti.”
The new draft policy provides both a “proactive” and “reactive” approach towards dealing with graffiti incidents and enabling the use of council’s powers and functions under the Graffiti Control Act 2008.
In NSW, marking property can attract a fine up to $440 or, for an aggravated offence, $2200 or 12 months imprisonment.
Possessing a graffiti implement with intent can attract a fine up to $1100 or six months imprisonment.
