On Monday our doubles tournament wrapped-up with the team of Marcelle Steele and Gary Thompson taking the overall honours closely followed by Will Rawle and Callum Ryan.
The doubles format has proven to be a fun and relaxed way of getting a bit of exercise whilst not being as full-on as the singles format.
The semi finals for the singles tournament kicked off on Tuesday. David Grimes, subbing up a grade, had a tough win over Ganesh Natarajan 11-6,12-10,10-12,11-6,5-11. Daniel Shelton and Lizette Taylor also had a great match, Shelton winning 9-11,11-3,11-13,11-4,11-7.
This gave the Jets a handy lead and the pressure was on the highly-fancied Wanderers. Tim Allen for Wanderers then steadied the ship by claiming a solid win over Thompson 11-8,11-2,11-4 and then Wanderers captain, Trev Whitby, sealed things with a win over sub Brian O’Leary.
Phoenixes got off to a flying start thanks to solid wins by Ian Hookway and Dakota Boardman. Fred Hammer and Jacob Harrison of Mariners got their team back on an even keel all to no avail, Phoenixes claimed the overall win on games.
Wednesday had undefeated Taipans continuing on their winning way toppling Breakers. Wins going to Grimes and Nicholas Croucamp for Breakers. Blayne Thompson was the only winner for Breakers. Colleen Vaccaro and Brodie Lashbrook won for Kings getting their team through to the finals; Dion DeMamiel had a great match against Angelo Di Benedetto to have the only win for Hawks.
Thursday and Renegades got off to a good start with a tough match between Ian Draper and Carol Davidson, Draper winning 7-11,11-5,11-9,9-11,12-10. Sixers then took control with convincing wins to Garry Walker, Declan Ryan and sub Bryan Shepley. Stars took on Strikers with Steele getting things off to a good start for Stars, claiming a solid win over Rawle.
Dawid Croucamp then got Strikers back on track by some powerful shots against Erin Draper winning 10-12,11-6,11-8,13-11. Thompson subbed up to win for Strikers and O’Leary had a lucky comeback against Thompson wining 8-11,9-11,14-12,11-4,11-7.
