Never fear, there are two venues right here in Leeton shire that can help residents escape the heat this summer.
Gogeldrie Weir and the Leeton pool offer a place to cool off, enjoy a summer barbecue with friends and family and much.
The weir is also trialing new daylight saving opening hours for day visitor access to the location seven days per week from now through until February.
The Gogeldrie Weir campground, which is licensed to a private operator on a nonexclusive basis, doubles up as a public recreation reserve for day visitors.
With the area increasing in popularity and getting busier, new strategies are being trialed to better manage safety and amenity for the two user groups who share the same site.
Leeton Shire Council mayor Paul Maytom said the weir was a much-loved asset by the community and it was important day visitors have good access to the reserve and its barbecue and toilet facilities.
“We are very fortunate to boast a beautiful natural attraction such as Gogeldrie Weir that is a great source of enjoyment to residents and visitors to our shire,” he said.
“To be able to offer access to the weir to people who like to fish, boat and utilise the great picnic spots and amenities is extremely important to council.”
The weir is fully fenced with access to the river through child proof gates and a public boat ramp is adjacent to the park.
The new operating arrangements for day visitor access to Gogeldrie Weir are:
- Gate opens for day visitor entry: 8am
- Gate closes for day visitor entry: 6.30pm
- Day visitors to leave the Weir by 8.30pm
- Entry is $2 per person with children under five free. This charge offsets the costs to the campground operator of maintaining and cleaning the barbecues and toilets.
- People only wanting to view or access the weir are permitted to walk through the campground at no cost provided they check in with the campground operator and do not use any of the facilities.
Council and the campground operator will review the trial at the end of February 2019.
Community members who wish to write in about their experience over the trial period can send their feedback to council@leeton.nsw.gov.au or the General Manager Leeton Shire Council, 23-25 Chelmsford Place, Leeton, NSW 2705.
Meanwhile, the Leeton pool is also an oasis each summer, offering somewhere for both young, old and everyone in between to have a quick dip or leisurely swim.
It boasts a number of facilities, including an eight lane, 50-metre Olympic pool, wading pool and toddler pool.
There are maintained lawns, kiosk, change rooms, disabled person chairlift, free waterslide and barbecue facilities.
The pools and waterslide may be hired for private functions upon request.
The venue is available for private functions after normal closing times. Contact council for more information.
