The registered nurse has only recently started at Leeton District Hospital and her story is an interesting one. 

Mrs Dachi grew up in Kenya and her father teaches medical students, so a career in that field was something she always wanted. 

When she was 18 she moved to the United Kingdom and joined the British Army in 2002 where she started her training in nursing. 

For three years she studied at university in Birmingham.

“We were military personnel at a civilian university, so basically our job for three years was to go to uni,” Mrs Dachi said. 

Following her graduation, she was posted to Gosport – a town near the English Channel for four years. Within that time she was deployed to places like Kuwait and Iraq.

After completing her fourth year, she left the military and married her husband before the pair went backpacking for a year and eventually settled back in the UK. 

What followed was more studies, including completing a masters degree, working at Cambridge University and starting a PhD. 

In more recent times Mrs Dachi and her husband decided they wanted to move to Australia. After plenty of research and looking for jobs, Mrs Dachi eventually secured a two-year position at Leeton District Hospital. 

Having started only this month, Mrs Dachi will be joined by her husband in Leeton next month. 

Already she has found the people in the shire to be welcoming and friendly. 

“I can’t wait to get out and explore a little bit more … this is the Australia we wanted to come to and live in,” Mrs Dachi said. 

Nursing is something she continues to be passionate about and hopes her skills will be put to good use in Leeton. She will also continue to complete her PhD.

“I really enjoy nursing because of the people … I love striking up a conversation and learning about them,” Mrs Dachi said. 

“For me, nursing has given me that face-to-face contact with people. 

“Everyone here in Leeton has been so lovely and I can’t wait to meet more people.”
