THE summer round of squash kicked off last week with some new players as well as some who have a break from the game for a while.
Tuesday had Jets take on Wanderers and Trev Whitby and Macauley Harrison got the night started. Trev got the better of Maca winning 9-5,6-9,9-5,9-4. Declan Ryan defeated Matt Collins 9-1,9-6,9-6 and then Hayden Brewer defeated Lizette Taylor 9-3,9-2,9-2.
This gave Jets the advantage and it was up to Natalie Fiumara to get her side back into contention. Natalie defeated Alex Taylor 8-9,9-6,9-0,9-0 but it was not quite enough; Jets won on points.
Mariners took on Glories and Ondria Miller had a convincing win against Trinity Taylor. Ganesh Natarajan was too strong for John Gown winning 9-3,5-9,9-4,9-1. Garry Walker had to use all of his match craft to defeat Will Rawle 9-4,9-5,3-9,9-6 and Jacob Harrison made it all look too easy beating sub Brian O’Leary 9-6,9-7,9-7 giving Mariners the win.
Wednesday had Bullets and Breakers and Bryan Shepley got Bullets off like a shot winning 9-3,9-4,9-0 against Dion DeMamiel. Matt Piper beat Isaac Bunge, winning 7-9,9-7,9-3,5-9,9-4. Brianna Gray-Mills defeated Carol Davidson and James Kelly came back after a long break to defeat Ian Hookway, giving the win to Bullets.
Taipans took on Hawks and Alayna Croucamp and Brodie Lashbrook played the match of the week, Alayna winning 7-9,9-2,8-9,10-9,9-5. Nicholas Croucamp got the better of Ian Draper winning 5-9,9-6,9-4,9-8. Nicholas subbed up to play his father Dawid. Dawid won 9-2,9-0,6-9,10-9. Blayne Thompson sealed the win for Hawks defeating Emily Lyons.
Thursday, Blayne Thompson subbed up to defeat David Cross and Jackson Goman had the legs to win against Angelo Fiumara. Gary Thompson defeated Anthony Iannelli 9-3,9-4,9-7. Domenic Fiumara won a close contest against Simone Bruno 9-6,5-9,5-9,9-5,9-2 giving the win to Scorchers. Trish Fletcher beat Naomi Rawle 9-4,9-0,9-4. Callum Ryan defeated Dawid Croucamp 9-4,9-7,10-8.
Marcelle Steele toppled Sean Ryan making the final match of the evening the decider. Brian O’Leary won for Strikers against Col Thompson but it wasn’t enough – Renegades won on points.
