Early release for teeny little fish was a timely exercise
OFF AND AWAY: The fingerlings were released into the Murrumbidgee River earlier than usual ahead of the Bidgee Classic next month. More will also be released at the event.
THOUSANDS of little fishies are now navigating their way through the Murrumbidgee River following a timely release.
Every year the Leeton Bidgee Classic committee releases thousands of fingerlings into the river system, but at the advice of the Native Fish Hatchery and NSW Fisheries organisations it was decided to release thousands of Murray Cod a little earlier than usual.
Around 2500 of the fingerlings were released at the Euroley Bridge ramp on Friday evening as the classic continues in its bid to ensure it does its part for a healthy river system.

Leeton Bidgee Classic vice president Jodie Ryan said more fingerlings would be released at the event in March.
“It was decided to do it earlier because of the river conditions and everything that has been happening there, but also because of the available of the Murray Cod fingerlings,” she said.
The release of the fish last Friday was attended by various sponsors and community members.
The classic will be held on March 8, 9 and 10 and it’s all systems go.
Already, 90 anglers have signed up to take part.
“That’s really good for this time of year … probably more than we would usually have at this time,” Ms Ryan said.
“Obviously the big draw card this time is the extension of the fishing waters all the way to Euroley Bridge.
