The signature characteristic of the Leeton community is its support and generosity. I am continuously inspired by so many people who inject their passion and commitment for positive change. Recently I spoke with an amazing woman whose experiences with the impact of mental health within her family gave her a passion to assist families torn apart from the collateral damage of depression, suicide and drug dependency. The importance of raising awareness and ongoing support for our community led her to become a fundraiser supporter for the Black Dog Institute. The Black Dog Institute has a unique approach in combining medicine with research, education and the voice of lived experience to reduce the incidence of mental illness and suicide, removing stigma and improving lives. She has been a part of some amazing events such as Cycle for Mental Health in Vietnam in 2015 helping raise $15,000 for research and is looking forward to the Hike for Mental Health in September, which will take her to the Great Wall of China. To raise community awareness takes great commitment and support. She has organised fundraising opportunities such as the upcoming Barefoot Bowls at L&D on March 30 - $30 per head, including a banquet. Wayne Wigham, ex-footballer, will share his experiences. Another fundraiser includes a food and entertainment evening with hypnotist Greg Hudson on July 13 at the MIA Club.
