AGE doesn't get in the way of a roaring time of the road for members of the MIA branch of the Ulysses Club. The organisation is active in the MIA with its rides, social occasions and fundraising for community and charity groups. It's point of difference being it is for motorcyclists aged 40 and over. The MIA branch has been operational since 1996 and is one of 136 in Australia. There are other branches across the world as well, according to MIA branch president and Leeton resident David Schoer. With a motto of "grow old disgracefully", Mr Schoer said the idea was fun, fundraising and fellowship. In the past it has raised money for Gralee School and branches of Can Assist throughout the MIA. "We're a non-profit organisation … that's what we do and what we're all about," Mr Schoer said. "We're looking for people to join, come along and see what we do. If you like it, hey join up." There's around 60 members of the branch in the MIA. In 2015 the Ulysses Club as a whole was the largest charity organisation in Australia, beating out groups such as Rotary and Lions. "The objects of the club are to provide ways in which older motorcyclists can get together for companionship and mutual support," Mr Schoer said. "To show motorcycling can be an enjoyable and practical activity for riders of all ages." While there are set functions or rides for the MIA branch, members often get together socially for a ride of their own. Even something as simple as heading to other towns in the region on their bikes for a coffee and a catch up. Membership of the club is open to any person who holds a current motorcycle licence and is aged 40 or over. According to Mr Schoer one of the best parts of being a member is the connections throughout the country with other members. If one member finds themselves with a broken down bike in a town, they can usually find assistance through the help of another Ulysses member.
