The first time I heard the term Art Deco, I found myself madly googling “what is Art Deco” having just discovered I was the new function coordinator for Leeton’s newest event - the Leeton Art Deco Festival, to be held in 2011. Fast forward eight years and I’m quietly excited to see the new and improved Art Deco festival returning to our town. Leeton really captures the inter-war period like no other town, and I now know that the Art Deco period encompasses so much more than just architecture, although we have plenty of beautiful examples of that too. In the 1920s, '30s and '40s Leeton was booming, growing and making its mark. It was a time of romance, beautiful clothing, flashy cars, dancing and so much more. I was incredibly privileged to attend the Napier Art Deco Festival in New Zealand back in 2017 on behalf of Leeton Shire Council and saw a glimpse of the possibilities. I genuinely believe a festival of this nature has real potential for our little community, but we need to get behind it and all do our part. The united support provided by the Napier community and the subsequent ownership shown, is critical to Napier’s ongoing success and we need to replicate that - from the schools and the dance groups to the local retailers - everyone was getting involved. Research shows there’s a market in Australia we can tap into but we need our community spirit to shine through to make this new festival a success. So do yourself a favour, google “what is Art Deco” and save the dates July 12, 13 and 14 - you might just be surprised.
