While the actual work itself may be some time off, a scoping study has been given funding by the state government to the tune of $40,000, with Leeton Shire Council also chipping in the same amount to cover the costs.
The study will now be able to get underway to investigate possible upgrade options and how the plant can be sustained or even moved to another location to service Leeton, Whitton, Yanco and Murrami.
Member for Murray Austin Evans was in Leeton for the funding announcement on Thursday and said it was crucial projects such as this were undertaken.
"We know how important access to safe drinking water is for our regional towns and with ongoing drought conditions across the region, water security is a priority for community now more than ever," he said.
“The first step in this development is determining the most feasible option, this includes determining the size and capacity of a new plant, considering different process options and determining the best site for construction.
"We want to look after people and deliver safe drinking water."
Once the scoping study is done, the next stage will be detailed costing and designs.
Mayor Paul Maytom said it was vital the plant was either upgraded or a new one constructed to ensure a healthy water supply for the shire going forward.
"Clearly, this means a lot to us … it will take us well into the future," he said.
"We need to determine what we need as a whole to service all of our communities.
"We certainly have safe and reliable water now, but going forward there are new compliance standards we will need to meet."
